Plant-based nutrition: what science says

The speaker: Marc Oliveira (inst:@marco.poischiche)
This free talk is not about promoting veganism as an ideology.

It is about looking at plant-based diets through the lens of nutrition science, long-term health, and real dietary patterns.

We’ll start by clarifying what “plant-based” actually means, and how it differs from vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and flexitarian diets.

Then we’ll explore one of the most common questions around vegan nutrition:

If plant-based diets often show strong health outcomes in large studies, why are vegans so often associated with deficiencies?

To answer this, we’ll look at two major long-term studies: EPIC-Oxford and the Adventist Health Study-2, comparing different dietary patterns such as meat-eaters, vegetarians, pescatarians and vegans.

We’ll discuss what the research shows regarding body weight, cardiovascular health, diabetes risk, cancer risk, nutrient intake and common nutritional gaps.

The goal is not to say that veganism is “perfect” or that everyone should eat the same way.

The goal is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a plant-based diet, why planning matters, and how to build a diet that is strong, complete, sustainable and health-promoting in the long term.
