A Kirtan, In Solidarity with World Suicide Prevention Day
Every September 10th, communities around the world pause to observe World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stigma, and reminding people that support is always within reach. This year, Samyama Self Healing Center is marking the day the way it knows best: through music, community, and connection.
On Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, Samyama is hosting Kirtan with Diana & Friends at its space in Ubud, Bali, an evening of call and response chanting open to everyone, regardless of experience.
What Is Kirtan, and Why Ubud Keeps Coming Back to It
If you have spent any time in Ubud's wellness scene, you have likely heard the word "kirtan" mentioned alongside sound baths, breathwork, and ecstatic dance. Kirtan is a practice of devotional chanting, traditionally rooted in call and response singing of sacred names and mantras. A lead vocalist sings a line, and the group sings it back, layer by layer, until the room is moving as one voice.
What makes kirtan different from a concert is that there is no audience. Everyone in the room is a participant, whether they are singing at full volume, humming quietly, sitting in stillness, or simply listening. That openness is part of why kirtan has become such a steady thread in Ubud's community calendar: it asks nothing of you except your presence.
Inside Kirtan with Diana & Friends
This gathering is led by Diana, accompanied by a small ensemble on harmonium, guitar, mridanga, and karatals. Together, they guide the room through a rising arc, starting in quiet, meditative repetition and building, as the evening unfolds, into rhythm, movement, and celebration.
You do not need to know the words. You do not need to be able to sing. The invitation is simple: listen to the melody, join when you feel ready, and let the music carry you.
For Diana, kirtan is above all a practice of connection, connection to yourself, to the people around you, and to something larger. The chanting becomes a way to slow down, clear the noise of the day, and reconnect with qualities like courage, compassion, gratitude, and joy.
Why This Kirtan Is Happening on World Suicide Prevention Day
Samyama chose September 10th deliberately. World Suicide Prevention Day exists to remind people, in very concrete terms, that they are not alone, and that reaching out is always possible. A room full of people breathing and chanting together is, in its own way, a physical expression of that same message.
As part of this initiative, a portion of proceeds from the evening will go directly to LISA Helpline, a program of the Bersama Bisa Foundation (bisahelpline.org), Indonesia's first multilingual suicide and crisis support helpline. LISA provides free, confidential crisis support to callers across Indonesia in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. By attending, guests are directly supporting the people who keep that line open.
